Our criteria for funding

The Volant Trust is a grant-making trust, which primarily helps fund charitable organisations and projects based in Scotland working to alleviate social deprivation, particularly concerned with women, children and young people.

The Volant Charitable Trust is committed to other work that includes international projects, the support of single parents through Gingerbread and more recently, charities assisting groups impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic in the UK and Internationally.

 

UK & International Covid-19 response fund

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, The Volant Charitable Trust is helping to support UK and international charities that demonstrate a strong focus on alleviating social deprivation and helping vulnerable groups who have been particularly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic in the UK and internationally.

Initial beneficiaries of the fund included the British Red Cross, the Disasters Emergency CommitteeUnited Way and Operation USA to help the short-term impact on the frontline of this pandemic

A further seven figure fund has now been awarded to approximately 35 charities across the UK and internationally to help alleviate the longer term, social effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Volant Trust accepts applications from charities in the UK and internationally that demonstrate a strong focus on alleviating social deprivation and helping vulnerable groups who have been particularly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Applications for medical equipment and the production or distribution of PPE will also be considered.

We acknowledge how much work goes into making an application and the Trustees are keen to help charities as much as possible prior to submitting their request for funding.

Funding FAQs:-

 

Do you accept applications from individuals?

No, the Volant Trust only accepts applications from registered charities, community interest companies and community organisations.

We need funding for equipment. Will you provide funding towards this?

No, the Volant Trust does not generally provide funds for capital expenditure. It specifically gives funding towards project and administrative core costs. Although for the Covid-19 response fund, applications can be submitted for projects which include PPE or other essential medical equipment with awards made at the sole discretion of the Trustees.

Will you accept an application for one of your ‘Other Funding’ areas such as multiple sclerosis or international causes?

In addition to the Open Grants Programme, the Volant Trust will only accept applications for the Covid-19 response fund from charities or their projects demonstrating a strong focus on alleviating social deprivation and helping vulnerable groups who have been particularly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Do you fund projects from across the UK?

Our Open Grants programme is only open to projects taking place in Scotland, whose beneficiaries are based there too. The Covid-19 response fund covers the UK and international, providing that the charity applying demonstrates a strong focus on alleviating social deprivation and helping vulnerable groups who have been particularly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Is there a limit to the value of grants awarded?

For the Open Grants programme, the Volant Trust seeks to fund projects in Scotland that will make a real difference to the beneficiaries. We deliver a funding programme which makes multi-year awards (for up to three years) of £15,000 or less per annum.
For the other areas of funding, such as the Covid-19 response fund, any grants are made at the sole discretion of the Trustees.

Will you accept applications for fund raising campaigns or to support us in our fundraising activities?

No, the Volant Trust will only support specific projects and it does not support general fundraising activities.

Can we make an application for funding to then distribute to others in the form of grants or Bursaries?

No, the Volant Trust will only support projects or core costs that will support organisations to deliver work to support our specific programme areas.

Do you provide funding retrospectively?

No, The Volant Trust does not cover costs already incurred or activities which have already taken place.

Timescales

To receive a decision by October 2022 applications must be submitted between 1st January and 31st July 2022.
To receive a decision by April 2022 applications must be submitted between 1st August and 31st December 2021.
